Unfortunately, due to the glare from the flash, you can’t see exactly what’s going on here, but this is my latest piece of art which was hanging in the See Spot Community Art Space (site’s still under construction) here in Ithaca all throughout April.
Some of you might recall the nut I busted Rasterbating back in March—that enlargement of Nixon and Elvis shaking hands in the Oval Office. After staring at it hanging on my wall for a few weeks, a lightbulb popped over my head.
I glued the image down to a large piece of cardboard (which used to be an anti-war sign) and pasted the Lubavitcher Rebbe’s head on Nixon and The Notorious BIG’s head on Elvis. Then I went to town creating a cityscape around them and “grimying” shit up. The large phrase across the center reads, “‘im no chant down Hymie Town,” an ironic reference to black community leaders who have publically referred to NYC as “Hymie Town” (an ethnic slur denoting alleged Jewish control over NYC) and which plays upon the Rastafarian invocation “We gwan chant down Babylon.” Encircling both Schneerson and Biggie’s heads are golden halos. In between, the words “Equally blessed.” A famous portrait of Rudy Giuliani in Uncle Sam gear is nestled in the gutter.
I don’t have any new pieces to put up in See Spot this month, however I will be running an underground film series there all throughout May. Click here for more info about that.
Also, on Sat. May 22, I’ll be performing at The Wownet Café here in Ithaca (7-10pm), and sometime the following week I’ll be sitting on a panel at the New Voices conference at NYU. More info on that coming soon.
