last night i drove up with chandler bong (shamir power), yocheved, and guy to jay’s place in upstate ny, where we made a dinner, a fire, and all manners of pleasantries before sarah and i returned back to nyc this mornin’, leaving yo & guy to make their way to elat chayyim. i’m based at shamir’s for shabbos (tho dinner at the markers’ tonight). earlier i took a stroll over to west side judaica to buy a couple of kippot, and i’ve got to say i’m impressed that such shtark hareidi guys would be selling women’s kippot and talliyot. you gotta give captialism credit: it doesn’t discriminate.

while i was there, a black u.p.s. deliveryman came into the shop. “shabbat shalom!” he decreed. “where’s my cholent? you’re supposed to have some cholent for me!”

“oy, you didn’t answer your phone when i called,” the white hareidi sales clerk replied.

and then i started thinking…

when the revolution comes, jew merchants will give away matzo balls and gefilte fish to anyone they see with an afro.”

i suppose the revolution has already come, but i must not have noticed, seeing how it was not televised.

Why spend West Side dollars on kippot when you could buy them here for substancially less?

You were in the upper west and didn’t fucking tell me? It’s called the cross-town bus, dude.

At the Biennial last fall I was impressed to see hareidi guys selling kippot and tallitot to women, too.

Upstate NY, eh? If you were anywhere near western Massachusetts, you could’ve waved to me en route…

Aw, how nice! I remember the good old days that I’d spend at Jay’s place in front of the fire-place. Glad joy is continuing to dwell there.

    Mobius,

Where does “upstate” start for you? For most people in the City, it seems to start in Westchester.

  6. mobius says:

um, does bear mountain not qualify in your book?

  7. kyle's mom says:

Any native new yawka knows upstate starts in Joisey. :-)

  8. According to the NYSDMV (that’s New York State Department of Motor Vehicles, yo), there are three regions in New York State:
    1. New York City
    2. Long Island
    3. Upstate

Of course, being a city kid with an upstate heart (or is it upstate kid with a city heart? i can never remember), i can tell you unequivocably that “upstate” and “downstate” are nothing more than DIRECTIONS. Wherever you at, you’re at the center of the world. Or at least the state.
