Peak oil is really the peak of cheap oil—that is black bubbly liquid oil. There’s actually just as much refinable oil in the tar sands of Canada and Venezuaela as people have pulled out of the ground to date. So he’s right in that oil will be vastly more expensive, though obviously technological breakthroughs in extraction process will cause prices to drop.

Of course, this is all completely silly, since we need to reduce carbon emissions to something under a third of what we are using now in the next 30 years (George Monbiot suggests a 90% cut by 2030). If that doesn’t happen, climate change (warming) becomes irreversable and the planetary climate goes completely haywire.

Why doesn’t hemp ever come into discussion? It’s almost too easy a problem to solve.

  3. Mobius says:

hemp is great for saving trees and thus cutting carbon. it’s also great as a replacement for fibrous crops (like cotton) that bleach the earth and require lots of pesticides. however, hemp is actually a less efficient source of biofuel than algae and cellulose-rich shrubs.
