Cleaning out my Facebook

House

No offense to any of my readers or social acquaintances, but in response to Cory Doctorow’s article in Newsweek, as well as my own disinterest in either keeping tabs on the lives of strangers or broadcasting my behavior on Facebook to strangers, I’ve decided to remove people who I don’t actually know in a personal or professional context from my Facebook friends. Don’t take it personally — I deleted over 110 “friends.” You’re still always welcome to reach out to me by email. I just kind of want to take some of my privacy back.

Another reason to keep the social-networking site contacts to a minimum is that more and more employers check potential employees’ friend lists to see whether they associate with people, if even only online, that they would not want their company to be linked with in any way. I advise my students to use a separate, “professional” (something to the likes of firstname.lastname@majorprovider.com) email address for applications and to google their names, nicknames and email addresses in time before they start applying for jobs to check who / what site makes mention of them and if need be, have the info removed. Also, there are lots of seriously creepy stalkers out there :)

Having the same name as not one, but TWO celebrites, I can never be googled.

Sarah, you haven’t lived until a man whom you have no connection with tattoos your name on his arm. It’s seriously fun times! =)

Ray, I’ve had call someone call me repeatedly between 2am and 3am to tell me he’d like to nibble on my ankles till they start bleeding. Want more creep stories?
