it seems like he’s just setting up mearsheimer to explain himself, giving him opportunities to make his opinions more clear by pretending to be a typical dumb righty who doesn’t get it. this is his usual shtick.
He was far too nice to Mearshimer. Walt and Mearshimer claimed that Israel has dominated US foreign policy decisions about the middle east since its creation in 1948, like no other issue.
But there IS an issue that has dominated US policy towards the middle east since the end of WWII, far outweighing all other considerations. Even a cursory glance at the US national archives (which Mearshimer and Walt never even cite) or records of any administration’s decisions, speeches, private cabinet meetings, or research spending, will reveal that there is one thing that dominates US policy in the ME.
OIL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
maybe it was too easy of a potshot, but for Colbert not to mention this was irresponsible.
I think it’s pretty obvious if you watch their shows that Stewart/Colbert aren’t experts on the middle east, and I don’t see why you would expect them to be. Like I would have pointed out that Saudi Araia and Israel have been getting closer and closer to each other since they realized that they both hate Iran, but whatever.
